Country #3

Welcome to Barbados
Welcome to Barbados

I’m a numbers guy, and because I remember everything numerically, I remember the third county I ever visited was Barbados. I saw an advertisement for the Barbados Food and Rum Festival and figured it would be a great time to return and sample what the country has to offer.

The last time I was in Barbados was 2005 and back then it wasn’t a Republic. I was there for a total of four days and it was quite an experience. Back then I wasn’t the travel guru (in my mind) that I am today. I understood nothing about travel. I showed up when I was told and followed the lead of the adults. The only thing I was aware of is an old Caribbean joke that said Liat meant “Leave Island any time” considering they were always late despite having a schedule.

I remember traveling for what felt like an eternity, making stops in Antigua and Dominica before ultimately landing in Barbados. After securing a driver at the airport I traveled to a guest house. I remember renting a room from an elderly woman and running around the corner to get food from the shop. The beach was roughly a 10-minute walk and I managed to miss it every time.

Barbados is the one place I have visited and other than the passport stamp, I have no pictures that can take me back to that time, which is why I think it’s a great time for a visit. So if you’re a Barbadian Hotel and want to hire me for some free promo, you know where to find me. Until then, let’s see how long it takes me to return.
