Joshua Tree National Park has been on my camping and hiking list for a few years. A recent trip to Los Angeles allowed me to make this a reality. The National Park Services says it best, it's the place where two deserts meet, the Mojave and Colorado, with fascinating plants.
Joshua Tree National Park is roughly two and a half hours from downtown Los Angeles. (depending on traffic)
I first heard about Joshua Tree from the movie Ingrid Goes West. Just like Ingrid, I wanted to experience the park for myself. Joshua Tree is SoCal's (Southern California), Hippie Haven. Joshua Tree is a town itself, but the main attraction is the National Park.
Entry to the park is $30 per vehicle and $25 per motorcycle. An annual pass is $55 if you plan to visit multiple times. It was free when I visited on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The park is fifteen miles of natural vegetation, rocks, and of course Joshua trees. There are signs for upcoming exhibits and notable things to see in the area. There are also benches to sit and have lunch with your families and friends. Just remember to clean up after yourself.
There is no actual lodging in Joshua Tree National Park, but the nearby town of Quail Springs has more than enough options. From here, the park is roughly five to ten minutes away.
Staying in the park overnight is discouraged, and the presence of park rangers will make it very difficult. However I've been told, on nights when the moon is hidden, it's a perfect time to stargaze.
I had the idea to shoot the trip on my Mavic Pro but found out drone use is prohibited in the park and can carry fees of almost $500. ($481 to be exact)
Nevertheless, a visit to Joshua Tree is a must, especially for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, or if you are looking to try something new.
