I swear, half of the fun of Lesotho is getting there. The drive from Durban South Africa to Lesotho is nothing short of amazing. I started the day on the beaches of Durban City and somehow ended up in the Highest Pub in Africa.
We entered Lesotho through the Sani Pass. The Sani Pass is this rugged route that enters Lesotho by way of South Africa. Although the distance is short, its hilly, requires you to drive through mountains and rivers so make sure to add time to get stuck along the way. This requires the best of any 4X4.
Anytime you pull over, you will be rewarded by breathtaking view after breathtaking view with the added benifit of knowing the higher you go, the better the view becomes. At the top, you meet the Sani Pass Border crossing, one of the two border crossings for this trip. In total, you will receive four stamps, in and out of South Africa and in and out of Lesotho.
We stopped at a local village and met with the priest who was making bread inside of a typical clay hut, similar to those in the rural parts of Lesotho. He spoke about his country and gave in depth insight into day-to-day life of local people on his side of the country.
It was a great experience and a treat in fact to see the ingenuity of how people stay warm in those mountainous regions without the conventional heat and ovens, etc.

We then got back into the truck and headed to the Tallest Pub in Africa. It has undisturbed views of the Drakensburg mountains with a splash of waterfalls in between. After securing a picture of the occasion, we had lunch at the pub. That said, I can asure you it's once of the best burgers you will come agross and most items at the pub are sourced locally. They have coffee and treats as well and a gift shop to those that require reminders of the trip.
Heading back down the Sani Pass is as gut-wrenching as going up but now you have the added pressure of looking at the cliffs on your way down, The experience is one of the best I had in a while and would not trade it for anything.
